Extension & Refurbishment of Victorian Townhouse using Passivhaus methodology and CarbonLite guidance. Certified to the Passivhaus Institute's new EnerPHit (refurbishment) Standard. [NEW:Passivhaus Trust awards shortlisted project - presentation available on these pages].PHPP certification is based on 20 C, rather than the 21 C the house was heated to during 2010/11. Forecasts are based on a 'typical year' rather than the 'actual' year being monitored. Measured data here is from 2005/06 (before) and 2009/10 (after). Measured room temperatures show an average of 21 degrees centigrade during the heating season. Please note the final air leakage as certified under EnerPHit was an N50 of 1.0 ACH. When adjusted for 2010 average monthly temps.& an internal temp. of 21 C, PHPP predicted a space heat demand of 36kWh/m2.a whereas 35kWh/m2.a was measured.

Retrofit for the Future

Hounslow Passivhaus Retrofit - Grove Road

This social housing retrofit by bere:architects, will be Enerphit passivhaus making use of external insulation, new windows, and heat recovery ventilation to ensure fresh air at the same time as very low heat loss. Specific heat energy requirements will be reduced by 95%, while alsominimizing primary energy use. The existing property has an abnormally high energy demand asassessed using the Passivhaus Planning Package (PHPP). These large values are in part due to a complete absence of loft insulation. The main objectives of the project are to show that deepenergy cuts are possible with social housing stock. As UK exposure to and experience of Passivhaus grows, we aim to show that improved thermal comfort, reduced energy bills and lower CO2 emissions are possible for millions of people in existing houses.

Wake Green Road - Attempt to renovate to Passivhaus standard

This project is an attempt to take a 1920s detached house and make it as near to passivhaus as possible, although this probably means enerPHit (if we're lucky). 300mm external EPS on three sides, internal insulation on fourth (boundary) wall together with 300mm underfloor and full loft insulation. Air tight envelope design issues included eliminating thermal bridging at eaves level caused by the need to accommodate increased wall width, and the transition from internal to external insulation on the fourth wall. Planning requires reinstatement of appearance of front of property but the rear has been totally redesigned to maximise solar gain. Green roof on one-storey extension; solar (hot water) panels; greywater recycling unit for one shower/toilet; rainwater recycling rejected due to high environmental impact/not carbon neutral.
